Dr Sally Gray is a creative thinker whose self-crafted career has been independent and inventive. She is currently a writer, curator, artist, concept developer and creative producer with projects realised, nationally and internationally, under the umbrella of the arts consultancy she founded in May 1994.

One of Sydney’s most resonant exhibitions of this year.

In 1995 Sally Gray was invited by Fairfield Heritage Centre in Western Sydney to develop an exhibition tracing the settlement patterns and cultural specificities of the Italian immigrant communities of South Western Sydney. Working with Italian-Australian team members, Sally visited homes and farms, interviewing families, workers, business people and politicians. With Italian-speaking curatorial assistants, she looked into cupboards and glory boxes, noted domestic architecture and garden design and shared food. Together the team used artifacts lent by community members as the foundation of a narrative of visual and cultural complexity. Artist Ron Smith co-designed and installed the exhibition. The exhibition was subsequently shown at Liverpool Bicentennial Museum.
