Artist Tony Scott conceived a project to bring five Australian artists – Karen Casey, Astrid Spielman, Jill Orr, Tony Scott and Sally Gray – to exhibit at Redgate Gallery, Beijing, in 2001. The exhibition was subsequently shown in Melbourne and Sydney through 2002. Sally Gray’s work was derived from photographs of lotuses (architectural, sculptural and natural) taken in Asian archeological and historical sites. These were digitally manipulated using the saturated colour palette she had used for ‘China ’78’ at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre in 1998 – again referencing the aesthetics of Chinese revolutionary posters of the Mao years.
