Giant Birthday Candle for Sydney Opera House 25th Birthday

Giant Birthday Candle for Sydney Opera House 25th Birthday

This thing is fun. It’s irreverent, loopy, undemanding, pretty …

Sydney Morning Herald 2 October 1998

Invited by Sydney Opera House to propose a temporary sculptural form to signify a ‘birthday candle’ for the Opera House’s 25th anniversary in 1998, Sally Gray worked with artist Ron Smith to design an inflatable sculpture based on quantum physics and fractals.

Opera House CEO Michael Lynch says the birthday candle is representative of the Opera House’s Creative Path, curling upwards towards excellence and innovation: “A Giant Candlestick Marks the Opera House’s 25th birthday”, Sydney Morning Herald, October 2 1998
