In 1999 Sally Gray was invited by Warringah Council to create an exhibition for Manly Art Gallery and Museum, based on photographs of women at Sydney beaches from the 19th century to the mid twentieth century. The images she selected – from 7000 digitised images in the Local Studies Collection of Manly Warringah Library on Sydney’s Northern Beaches – traced women’s changing relationships to public space, outdoor recreation, the body and athleticism and fashionable style and dress.
