Don’t Forget to Remember
Don’t Forget to Remember is a small exhibition Sally curated for the Powerhouse Museum, MAAS Sydney to remember and celebrate queer artist David McDiarmid’s textile work, his fashion collaboration with fashion designer Linda Jackson, and his graphic design work for Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Living in New York between 1979 and 1987, David developed a calligraphic style to paint in acrylic on textiles – both as paintings (exhibited in a solo exhibition at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in 1984) and in fashion garments. The calligraphy was derived from New York subway and street graffiti. The project was timed to coincide with MAAS’s major Flamingo Park exhibition, Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson: Step Into Paradise opening October 2019 and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, February 2020. The exhibition title derives from McDiarmid’s ‘Rainbow Aphorisms’ series of 1993-94.
